Abstract

1,062,753. Umbrellas. D. V. BARNETT and D. D. BARNETT. June 25, 1964 [July 27, 1963], No. 29890/63. Heading A4P. [Also in Division E1] In an umbrella the lower part 17 of the shaft is offset horizontally from an upper tubular part 10, which carries a collapsible canopy-supporting frame and is connected to an intermediate tubular part 13 of the shaft by an elbow joint 8 which is limited to movement through 90 degrees. A sleeve 6, sliding on parts 10, 13 of the shaft when they are aligned is retained by a catch 7 to secure the frame in open position and a plastic covered spring 26 connects the part 10 to a joint 20 between the parts 17 and 13 to retain the offset position. The elbow joint 8 consists of a forked part and a knuckle part, connected by a hinge pin, and having spigots engaged in the parts 10, 13. The joint 20 has a locking screw secured in adjusted position along the part 13 and is disconnected for bundling of the umbrella into a package. A telescoping lower section 17b is secured in adjusted position by a locknut 18 and has a spike 19 or spade-like portion for insertion in the ground. The ends of the ribs 2 have rings 28 for engagement by hooks of a weather screen which may be pegged to the ground.
