Abstract
A polyphenyl is prepared by treating a 1-3-cyclohexadiene polymer which is a 1.4- or 1.2-polymer with halogen at at least 100 DEG C. The polymer may be a mixture of 1,2- and 1,4-polycyclohexadiene and the halogen bromine. The polymer may be treated at 125 DEG to 175 DEG C. in an inert solvent with at least 1.5 mol. of halogen per cyclohexene nucleus. The hydrohalic acid formed during the reaction may be drawn off by a current of inert gas and the product purified by heating at at least 150 DEG C.
