Abstract

1,062,653. Refrigerating. L. K. QUICK. May 5, 1964, No. 18697/64. Heading F4H. A refrigeration installation comprises a plurality of high-temperature evaporators 18 and low-temperature evaporators 30 for separate high- and low-temperature refrigerators, respectively, a first compressor 10 having its suction side connected via line 20 and header 19 to evaporators 18 and discharging through conduit 13 to a condenser 14, and a second compressor 12 having its suction side connected via line 32 and header 31 to evaporators 30 and discharging through line 22, 24 to the suction side of compressor 10. Liquid refrigerant from condenser 14 collects in receiver 15 from which part flows through line 16 to evaporators 18 and part flows through line 25, 27 and an intercooler 23 to evaporators 30. A third compressor 11 discharges to a condenser 34 which supplies indoor and outdoor evaporators 37 and 45, respectively, condensers 34 and 14 being positioned in an air duct having controllable fresh and indoor air inlets 42, 41, blower means and outlets 43, 44 to the exterior and interior of the building respectively. Compressor 11 may be used to replace either of the other compressors by closing valves 50 and 39A and opening either valves 51 and 48 or valves 53 and 49. If compressor 10 is replaced valves 70, 71 in its suction and discharge lines are closed, similar valves 74, 75 being provided for compressor 12. An oil separator 13A having a receiver 55 is provided upstream of condenser 14, the oil from the receiver being supplied to compressor 10 via valve 57, solenoid valve 58 and float switch 59 and via similar valves to the other compressors. In the modification of Fig. 2 (not shown) liquid refrigerant from the receiver (15) passes to a header (80) which is common to both evaporators (18) and (30) and slopes downwardly from its inlet end (81). The two highest temperature evaporators are connected to the header adjacent end (81) by lines (83, 84) containing sight glasses (17) and the refrigerators (18A, 18B) in which these evaporators are disposed have temperature-responsive means (97) arranged to operate an alarm (95) when the refrigerators simultaneously reach a predetermined high temperature.
