Abstract

A circular trough supported by surrounding floats has suction pipes extending radially inwardly through it (but not communicating with it) and connected to a central suction pipe below the trough for withdrawal of surrounding water by one or more pumps. The water flow induces flow of floating oil over the edge of the trough and into it, whence it is withdrawn upwardly. Preferably the water withdrawal pipe does communicate with the trough interior by a float-operated valve, so that the water level in the trough may be lowered a predetermined amount before withdrawal of oil commences to prevent contamination of withdrawn oil by water.
