Abstract

1,061,728. Methods and materials for making photographic images. EASTMAN KODAKCO. Sept.11, 1963 [Sept.11, 1962], No.35801/63. Heading G2C. Relief images are produced by image-wise exposing an unhardened silver halide emulsion containing iron, cobalt or nickel particles, developing so as to differentially harden or soften the emulsion and then subjecting the emulsion to a magnetic field so that the softer portions are removed to leave a relief image in the emulsion. Before subjecting to a magnetic field, the differentially hardened or softened layer may be contacted with a receptor sheet so that a relief image is also obtained on the receptor sheet after subjection to a magnetic field. The preferred method is to image-wise expose a gelatino-silver halide emulsion containing unhardened gelatine, a tanning developer, (e.g. 4-phenyl catechol) and carbonyl iron powder, develop in an alkaline solution to obtain differential hardening, pass the developed emulsion across the pole of the magnet so that the unhardened gelatine is removed to the magnet or to a receptor sheet. Either of the relief images obtained may be coated with magnetic ink and used as a printing plate. Alternatively, the exposed and developed silver halide emulsion layer may be treated with an etch bleach bath which oxidizes the silver and degrades the gelatine and degraded areas may then be removed.
