Abstract

A flowing mercury cathode cell of the diaphragmless type has the cathode base and anode surfaces parallel to each other and inclined at between 2 degrees and 85 degrees to the horizontal, a gas outlet adjacent the upper corner of the cell, the roof of the cell also being inclined to the horizontal and spaced sufficiently above the anode surfaces so that when the cell is substantially filled with electrolyte, e.g. brine, there is ample space for electrolyte agitation above and around the anode surfaces due to gas bubbles released from the anode surfaces during electrolysis rising with both a vertical and a horizontal component of movement towards the gas outlet so as to maintain substantial uniformity of electrolyte composition and temperature and avoid gas blanketing of the anode surfaces. As described the cell is closely similar to those disclosed in Specifications 1,061,443 and 1,061,445. The anode surfaces are constructed to provide transverse paths for the gas bubbles e.g. with grooves extending somewhat diagonally relative to the cell base plan and may be of graphite in the under surface of which channels are cut or of corrugated perforated or expanded metal form platinum coated titanium sheets. A cell flushing plug may be provided at the upper end of the cell.
