For producing guilloched printing plates, the vertical position of a rotary engraving tool (14) Fig. 2, is varied by rotation of a screw (40) so as to vary the depth of cut if desired, and so as to leave a desired area of the plate unguilloched where it is desired to produce a different design. The screw is rotated by a servomotor (48) under the control of a photo-electric scanner (54) moving over an original (62) through which passes light (64). In another form, Fig. 4, the tool is controlled by two eccentrics (72, 74) to which are coupled plates (78, 80) carrying cams (82) controlling switches (84, 86) connected in a logic circuit (88), the control device (52<SP>1</SP>) producing a deeper cut at desired times. A third eccentric effects transverse displacement of the work-table (66) line by line. In another form, Fig. 6, the eccentrics are controlled by potentiometers (94, 96), the control device (52) acting to omit a rectangular region in the centre of the guilloche. In another form, Fig. 8, three control signal generator devices (106) corresponding to individual component motions are connected selectively through a series of jack panels (108, 112, 114, 118) to the device controlling the cutter (12).
