Abstract

1,061,230. Trueing grinding wheels. CHURCHILL GEAR MACHINES Ltd. Dec. 23, 1965 [Dec. 24, 1964], No. 52497/64. Heading B3D. Apparatus for trimming a grinding wheel 17 comprises a pantograph 10. . . 14 which is movable about a fixed pivot to cause a follower 15 on the pantograph to follow a template 16, a slide 19 arranged to be moved by the pantograph in a first direction 20 perpendicular to the axis of the grinding wheel, a sub-slide 21 arranged to be moved in relation to the slide by the pantograph in a second direction 23 perpendicular to the first direction, and a trimming tool 30 carried by the sub-slide and arranged to trim one flank of the grinding wheel. As described, the apparatus includes a second sub-slide 22 movable in a direction 24 opposed to the second direction and carrying a second trimming tool 31 for simultaneously trimming the other flank of the grinding wheel. The link 14 of the pantograph is connected to a fixed pin 18, and the follower 15 is mounted at the junction of the links 11, 12. The link 10 is connected by a pin-joint 25 to a bracket 26 on the sub-slide 21, and the link 13 has a pin 27 which bears against a face 28 on a bracket 29 on the sub-slide 22. The centres of the follower 15, pin 18, pin-joint 25 and roller 27 are in a straight line, the centres of pin-joint 25 and roller 27 being equi-distant from the centre of the fixed pin 18. The weight of the slides is counterbalanced by a weight 32. In operation, as the follower 15 is moved along the profile of the template, the vertical component of the corresponding movement of the pinjoint 25 moves the slide 19 in the direction of the arrow 20, and the horizontal component moves the sub-slide 21 in the direction of the arrow 23 so that the tool 30, which may be a diamond adjustably mounted on the sub-slide, is moved in a path corresponding to that of the profile of the template but on a scale according to the pantograph. Simultaneously, the roller 27 causes horizontal movement of the sub-slide 22 in a direction opposite to the horizontal direction of movement of sub-slide 21 so that tool 31 trims the other side of the grinding wheel. In another embodiment, the pin-joint 25 between link 10 and bracket 26 is replaced by a pin on link 10 engaging a surface 39 on the bracket 26, and the slide 19 has a bracket 33 formed with a surface 34 engaging a roller 35 on a link 36 which is pin-jointed to the follower 15 and, intermediate its ends, has a roller 37 engaging a fixed surface 38. In operation, movement of the follower pivots link 36 about the roller 37 to produce vertical movement of the slide 19 and the pins 25 and 27 effect the horizontal movements of the subslides 21, 22. In a further embodiment, each tool is moved by a separate pantograph when the flanks of the grinding wheel have differing profiles.
