Abstract

1,061,144. Delivering sheets. J. V. BAILEY, G. C. FORTIN, P. R. PRICE, W.S. FORSTER and M. C. STANLEY. Aug. 16, 1963 [Aug. 16, 1962; Oct. 10, 1962], Nos. 31425/62 and 38435/62. Heading B6H. Apparatus for removing selected sheets from a stream comprises a suction drum consisting of a rotating sleeve (not shown) mounted on a stationary core 414. The core has two sets of intercalated circumferential grooves 416 and 416a. Grooves 416 are connected to a source of suction via valve means 451, 452. Grooves 416a are permanently connected to the source of suction. The sleeve is provided with two sets of apertures co-operating with the grooves. A valve stem 419 is intermittently operated to apply suction to the grooves 416 and remove a selected sheet from the stream. The selected sheet is finally conveyed to the stacking position by suction applied to the grooves 416a. The sheet is stripped from the drum by strippers engaging grooves in the drum sleeve. Some of the apertures in each set are enlarged lengthways to assist in holding the corners of a sheet to the sleeve. An extension 433 of the valve stem 419 has a head 434, Fig. 8. A pivoted lever 441 resting on a rotating cam 443 moves the valve stem back and forth to apply suction to the grooves 416 out of phase with the position of the apertures. When it is required to remove a sheet from the stream, a pivoted latch 444 is withdrawn by a solenoid 449 and suction applied to the grooves 416 in phase with the position of the apertures.
