Abstract

1,061,109. Boots &c. SCHOLL MFG. CO. Ltd. July 6, 1965 [July 6, 1964], No. 28637/65. Heading A3B. A sandal is made by sticking a cushioning layer 13 of thermoplastic foam e.g. foamed polyvinyl chloride, isocyanate, polyester or polyurethane, to an insole 11 having slots 12 around its marginal portion, the cushioning layer 13 having cut-out portions in register with the slots 12, placing a cover layer 15 over the cushioning layer, securing the edge of the cover layer 15 to the edge of the insole, cutting slits in the cover layer 15, passing the ends of straps 24, 26 through the slits and slots and bending the ends of the straps under the insole 11 and securing an outer sole 5 to the inner sole 11 by stitching 32 so that the ends of the straps 31 lie between the inner and outer soles. The outer sole 5 is shaped to conform to the plantar surface of the foot and includes a concave heel region and a convex portion which underlies the longitudinal arch of the foot. A metal arch support having a leather cover is placed over the convex region of the outer sole (Fig. 2, not shown). The sandal is finished by the addition of a heel 1 consisting of a horse-shoe shaped rand 4, a heel lift 2 and a wearing layer 3 e.g. of leather or rubber.
