Abstract

106.082. Harris. A. F. May 1, 1916, [Con vention date]. Stopping, tripping, and throw-out arrangements. -In a printing or like machine means are provided for simultaneously disconnecting the feed mechanism, and tripping the lowering mechanism of the delivery table upon failure of the feed supply. The pile table 114, Fig. 1, is supported by chains 115, 116 wound round drums 119 supported on shafts 121 at each side of the press. The shafts 121 are provided with worm-wheels 126 engaging, worms on a transverse shaft 123 operable by hand by a removable hand-lever at one end, or automatically by a ratchet wheel 139 secured to the shaft and engaged by a pawl 138 operated from a rotating shaft 87 of the delivery mechanism through gears 131, cam 132 and linkage 129, 134, 135, 136, 137. The extent of movement of the ratchet wheel 139 at each stroke of the pawl may be regulated by means of an adjustable guard plate 141 adapted to hold the pawl 138 out of engagement with the ratchet through a greater or less part of its stroke. The sheets are fed to the machine across a feed table 32, Fig. 3, by feed rollers 30 driven from the shaft 25 through a clutch 43 and gearing 40. The clutch 43 is connected to a rock shaft 69 which is also connected by link 48, shaft 150, and link 154 to a bell-crank lever 155 one arm of which is adjacent to a pin 146 on the pawl 138 so that when the clutch 43 is opened, the feed rollers 30 are disconnected, and simultaneously, the pawl 138 is moved out of engagement with the ratchet wheel 139 to stop the lowering of the table 114. The shaft 69 may be turned by a hand lever 74, and is also adapted to be turned automatically when a sheet is absent from the feed table 32. A trip-lever 63 is pivoted between a pair of notched disks fixed to a shaft 47 which is oscillated continuously by linkage 48, 49 from a crank disk on the shaft of the cylinder 20. One end of the trip lever is formed as a hook and the other and heavier end rests on the sheet. A third disk 53 provided with a notch 65 is secured to a sleeve loose upon the shaft 47 and carrying an arm 55 engaging an arm 56 on a rock shaft 58 connected by linkage 66, 67 to the shaft 69. Normally the trip lever 63 is prevented by the sheet from moving downwards sufficiently for its hook to engage the notch 65, but if the sheet is absent, the trip finger drops into a recess in the feed table and, during its next clockwise movement, its hook engages in the notch 65 and turns the sleeve 53 thereby opening the clutch 43 and tripping the pawl 138.
