Abstract
106,067. Ballingall, J. M., and Dempster, R. & J. Jan. 6, 1917. Retort furnaces.-In connexion with a furnace for the manufacture of hydrogen, spent water gas from the retorts is heated and then passed through the producer, the resulting gases being burnt with a limited supply of air so that a reducing atmosphere is produced in the retort chamber. The spent water gas, preferably freed from moisture in a scrubber, is passed through a main a and pipe a<1> to the channels b of a heater, as indicated by the full line arrows, and is delivered through channels b<2>, b<3> to the producer d at a point well above the primary air inlets e. The gases from the producer pass into a flue d<2> and through ports h to a combustion chamber k, where they meet a limited supply of air delivered through ports m<1> from heating channels m. The products of incomplete combustion enter the retort chamber through lateral openings n, and are exhausted through a downcast flue o leading to the water-gas heater. They pass through the heater in flues r alternating with the air channels b, combustion being completed therein by additional air supplied through passages r'. The gases are finally exhausted through the flue s which is fitted with a controlling-damper x and a cut-off damper w, interconnected with a two-way valve t in the gas main a in such a manner that, when the damper w is closed, the water gas is by-passed to the flue s.
