Abstract

A process for copolymerizing vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate comprises suspending vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate in a liquid suspending medium having a pH of 2.5 to 6 and comprising water, an organic, monomer soluble, free radical supplying initiator of ethenoid bond polymerization, a copolymer of vinyl methyl ether and maleic anhydride as suspending agent and methanol as particle size controller the proportions by weight being 0.03 to 0.5 parts of copolymer and 5 to 20 parts of methanol per 100 parts of said monomers, maintaining the monomers in suspension and warming the suspension until the monomers are copolymerized. Specified initiators are lauroyl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, caprylyl peroxide, 2,4-dichlorobenzoyl peroxide and azobis (isobutyronitrile). Polymerization may be effected in the presence of chain transfer agents, e.g. trichloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and bromoform. Examples describe processes in which a portion of the vinyl chloride is introduced initially, and the remainder continuously throughout the polymerization, and in which (2) polyvinyl alcohol is used as supplementary suspending agent.
