Abstract

A post driving apparatus comprises a ram 14 vertically displaceable in guide means, pivoting link arms 10, 7 pivotally attached at one end of the guide means and at the other end to a support body e.g. a tractor and adapted to extend parallel to support the guide means in a vertically directed attitude, a drive shaft 20 rotatable about an axis spatially fixed relative to the guide means, an eccentric member 18 driven by shaft 20 and interacting with ram 14 to cause reciprocation of the ram relative to the guide means, such than on reciprocation, a post under said ram is driven downwardly with an overall descent of the guide means corresponding to that of the post. In operation, the apparatus is lifted about the ends of arms 10, 7 attached to the tractor by hydraulic cylinders (Fig. 3 not shown). A post is placed under ram 14 so that the skirt of the ram surrounds its top end. The pressure in the cylinders is then released and shaft 20 rotated so that wall 15 of ram 14 is intermittently applied to the post. In a modification (Fig. 5 not shown) the reciprocal motion is applied by an eccentric cam situated above the ram on a cross-member. The cam is actuated by an hydraulic motor. In a further modification a chain drive extends from shaft 20 to an eccentric rotatably mounted on channel members 1 so as to reciprocate the ram 14.
