Abstract
105,993. Oliver, T. C. May 11, 1916. Acids, concentrating; bulk evaporators; progressive evaporators.- Acids are concentrated by passing a current of hot gases over the surface of the liquid and simultaneously forcing cool air through it for agitating purposes. The apparatus comprises a packed tower 22 for the preliminary concentration of the acid, and parallel concentrating flues 7 along which the acid flows from the base of the tower 22. Hot air or gas is admitted through ports 21, and cool air is forced into the acid through perforated pipes 20 so situated that the acid is subjected to vigorous agitation at the point of highest temperature. The gases pass along the flues 7 and up through the tower 22. The tower 22 is provided with packings 28, 27 of quartz and brick chequer-work supported by spaced arches 25. The flues 7 are formed of layers 12, 11 of acid-proof material and fire-brick capable of independent expansion and contraction. The concentrated acid flows away through suitable ports to a transverse trough 14 fitted with an outlet arranged to ensure a constant level within the apparatus.
