Abstract

1,059,819. Crop-spray apparatus. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORPORATION. April 17, 1964, No. 15988/64. Heading B2F. An apparatus suitable for spraying trees or crops &c. comprises a fan unit 24, Fig. 1, provided with a fan 30 adapted to discharge air through a radial outlet 24D at a high velocity, a plurality of spray nozzles 38, Figs. 3 and 5, disposed in the path of the air blast, means for supplying compressed air to the inlet 41A of each nozzle, and means for feeding highly concentrated spray material from a tank 23 to a central tube 43 in each nozzle so that the material is mixed and atomized in a chamber 44 in each nozzle and is discharged radially through a narrow slot 45 into the said air blast. The said material is fed from the tank 23 by a metering pump 50, Fig. 1, driven from a power take-off of a tractor 21, which supports the apparatus on hydraulically actuated pickup links 22, so that the material is evenly applied in spite of variations in the speed of movement of the tractor. The flow from the pump may be cut off by the operator on the tractor as required and the pump means may be adjusted to supply the matrial to different nozzles at different rates. The material is fed from the tank 23 to the pump 50 by a mixing and circulating system including a centrifugal pump 75, Fig. 2. A supply tank 66 for compressed air, Fig. 2, is partially filled with an oil L which is carried in small quantities to the nozzles 38 and acts as a lubricant. The pressure level in the tank is maintained at a determined level by a compressor 68. A further tank 166 contains water for flushing the pump 50 and the nozzles. The fan outlet may be restricted by cover plates such as 124W and the apparatus may be fitted with skids 120. The angle of deflector plates 86 may be periodically varied to change the path of the air blast under the control of an endless chain, Fig. 4 (not shown). Figs. 3A and 3B (not shown) depict deflector units adapted to vary 'the direction of the air blast in a front to rear direction with respect to the path of travel of the apparatus.
