Abstract

A ceramic dielectric material consisting of fine crystalline barium titanate and free and/or combined ZnO, is produced by a process comprising the steps of preparing a finely divided (particle size about 1 micron) mixture of a <PICT:1059538/C1/1> starting material consisting wholly or substantially of barium titanate, any remainder of starting material being BaCO3, BaO, TiO2 and/or compounds of these oxides, and an addition comprising ZnO, Zn2TiO4, a barium zinc titanate and/or TiO2 together with one or more of these zinc-containing compounds and sintering to compactness, the compositions and quantities of the starting material and addition being such that the molar ratio BaO : TiO2 in the product has values from 100 : 100 to 100 : (100 + 7X) wherein X is the molar percentage of free and combined ZnO in the product and has values from 0.5 to 5. The addition may contain free TiO2 and/or free ZnO and the starting material preferably has a molar ratio BaO : TiO2 of 100 : 96 to 100 : 108. The sintered product may contain 1-4 mol. per cent of free and/or combined ZnO; the combined ZnO may be present as Zn2TiO4, BaZn2Ti4O11 or Ba2ZnTi5O13. The composition of the sintered material lies within the area AA1D1D of the ternary composition diagram shown in Fig. 2.
