[Also in Division B8] In an apparatus for inserting articles (21) (Fig. 2, not shown) into cartons, folded cartons 2 (Fig. 4) are fed singly from a magazine 1 by an escapament device 3 comprising two pairs of rotatable blades, one pair at each end of the magazine, the blades 6, 6<SP>1</SP> of each pair being offset by the thickness of a folded carton in the direction of the pivot axis 7 (Fig. 1). The bottom carton in the stack is initially supported on the lower blade 6<SP>1</SP> of each pair, and is delivered to a pivotable intermediate support 8 in its horizontal position by rotation of the blades 6<SP>1</SP> away from the stack, the upper blades 6 at the same time moving into the stack to support the remainder of the cartons. On rotation of the blades 6<SP>1</SP> back into their initial positions beneath the magazine, the stack drops down to be supported thereon, prior to delivery of the next carton. The delivered carton is transferred from the intermediate support 8 in its inclined position to a further pivotable support 12 carrying a suction pad 16, by which it is raised into a vertical position (Fig. 2, not shown) prior to erection and insertion of the articles from beneath.
