Abstract

The invention comprises propylene monothiocarbonate having the characteristics of a faintly yellow liquid of refractive index <FORM:1059314/C2/1> having a boiling-point of 42 DEG to 43 DEG C. at 0.1 mm. mercury pressure and containing 27-29% by weight of sulphur and a method of preparing propylene monothiocarbonate comprising heating to a temperature of up to 90 DEG C. a mixture of propylene oxide and carbonyl sulphide in the presence of a basic compound as catalyst which catalyst has a basicity at least substantially as great as the basicity of sodium methoxide. Propylene sulphide may be prepared by heating propylene monothiocarbonate to 140 DEG to 210 DEG C. optionally the presence of a basic compound as catalyst.
