Abstract

[Also in Division E2] A semi-trailer tractor 10 comprises four inflatable bags 60, 62, 64, 66 mounted between a fifth wheel plate 70 and the tractor frame 12, 14, 16, 18, and an air compressor 186 and circuit, Fig. 7 (not shown), to inflate and deflate adjustably the inflatable bags. Longitudinal forces are transmitted from the plate 70 to the frame through a plate 68 which is linked by a resilient coupling 84, Fig. 4 (not shown), to a yoke 100, Figs. 2, 4 (not shown), of a drawbar 124 pivoted at 134 to a bracket 132 bolted to the frame 12, 14. Transverse forces are transmitted from the plate 70 to the frame through the plate 68 which is linked by a transverse hinge structure 140, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), to a support plate 30 mounted on the frame 12, 14. The bags 60- 66 are mounted on the plate 30 and secured to the plate 68. The plate 68 is locked to the plate 30, when the bags are deflated, by portions 178, 180, Fig. 3 (not shown), welded to the plate 30 and engaging in openings 182, 184 of the plate 68. Stops 52, 54, limiting the deflection of springs 20, 22, are secured via plates 44, 46 to the frame 12, 14. The compressor circuit, Fig. 7 (not shown), includes a constant pressure valve 196 adjusted by means of a throttle valve 200, and an inflate/deflate valve 222, the valves 200, 222 being manually controllable from the tractor cab.
