Abstract
1,058,388. Electromagnets. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Sept. 18, 1964 [Sept. 23, 1963], No. 38286/64. Heading H1P. In a magnetic structure having opposing magnetic pole members 14 separated by a non- magnetic gap, at least one of the members 14 comprises a polepiece 28 containing a magnetic body 38 which to vary the flux distribution in the gap is displaceable relative to a pole cap 26 which terminates the polepiece at its end nearer the other member 14. As shown, the body 38 is a flexible steel disc which can be deformed against a fulcrum edge A by rotation of a control nut 44, the flux being created by an electrical coil assembly 16 secured to a yoke side member 18. In a modification, the disc is deformed against concentric rings and the control is via a vernier screw thread. In another embodiment, the body is a sleeve (86), Fig. 5 (not shown), which is axially slidable within a polepiece ring (92). The structure is to provide a high-intensity homogeneous and uniform field in magnetic resonance spectroscopy applications.
