Abstract

1,057,524. Supply systems for high-pressure discharge lamps. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. May 31, 1965 [June 30, 1964], No. 23058/65. Heading H2H. [Also in Division H1] A discharge lamp having a filling of mercury together with additional material includes a resistance heater disposed within the envelope adjacent an electrode, and a self-resistance heated thermal switch mounted outside the envelope, the circuit connections being such that, upon starting up the lamp, the supply is first connected in series with the heater and switch until, upon the attainment of a given temperature, the switch opens to open-circuit the heater and apply the supply across the two lamp electrodes. In one arrangement (Fig. 5, not shown) a resistance heater is connected in series with an electrode 16 and a bimetal switch 38, the lead 36 being flexible to connect the supply across electrodes 14 and 16 when the switch moves to the open position, as shown. In other embodiments (Figs. 6 to 9, not shown) the heater is electrically insulated from the electrode 16 within the envelope: the heater and the switch are located at opposite ends of the lamp; and a heater is provided for each electrode.
