Abstract
Polyurethanes for use in the production of elastic articles are stabilized and their dyebility improved by reaction with 0.1 to 10% of a tertiary aliphatic amine containing in the molecule at least one ethyleneimino, epoxy, isocyanate, masked isocyanate, methylol and/or methylol ether group. The tertiary amine may be added after the formation of the polyurethane or to one of the polyurethane-forming reactants. The polyurethane may be derived from polyethers or polyesters and diisocyanates together with chain lengthening agents, by one shot or prepolymer methods, by reaction in the melt or in solution. The polyurethane and tertiary amine may be heated to 50-150 DEG C. to effect stabilization. In a typical example (1) a solution of a polyurethane was prepared by first reacting a copolyester from adipic acid, 2:2 dimethylpropane diol 1:3 and hexane diol 1:6 with diphenylmethane 4,41 diisocyanate in chlorobenzene and chain extending with carbodihydrazide in dimethylformamide and pigmented with TiO2 paste. A modifying component prepared by mixing (a) a solution in ethyl acetate of a biuret triisocyanate (from hexane 1:6 diisocyanate and water); (b) dimethylformamide and a mixture of (c) 1-amino 3 - diethylaminopropane and ethylene imine also in dimethylformide, was added to the polyurethane solution followed by a dioxane solution of a trisaziridine-urea (reaction product of the biuret triisocyanate described above and ethylene imine). Films were obtained by casting the mixture on to a glass plate.
