Abstract
1,056,815. Pulse radar. BOFORS A.B. June 19, 1964 [July 2, 1963], No. 25542/64. Heading H4D. Relates to a fire control system for laying a weapon carried by a moving platform (e.g. a ship), comprising a sighting means (e.g. a pulse radar) by which the direction and range of a target are measured and a fire control computer (6) fed with data from the sighting means and with data such as the platform's attitude, speed and course, wind speed and direction, and computing in known manner the data necessary for laying the weapon. The sighting means continuously and automatically follows the target by means of a servomotor which according to the invention is controlled by three different signals, one of which is the conventional signal from the sight and is dependent on the angular deviation about its rotational axis between sight and target directions, the second signal is received from a gyroscope responsive to angular velocity of the sight, and the third signal is from the fire control computer and is proportional to the angular velocity of the target about the axis of rotation of the sight. In the embodiment a lobe-switching radar provides signals proportional to orthogonal angular deviations (#z), (#h) about an axis (Z) between the directions, (A2), to the target and (A1) of the aerial boresight; the signals affect two servomotors (S1), (S2) to attempt movement of the aerial system such as to annul them. To eliminate the necessity for high error-signal amplification, due to ship attitude changes, and without the necessity of a stabilized gun platform, angularvelocity-sensitive gyroscopes (G z ), (G h ) are mounted on the aerial system and their outputs are fed as negative feedbacks to the servomotors to make the aerial direction (A1) independent of ship motion. The computer (6) calculates in known manner the velocity (V m ) of the target and also produces (1) a signal dE/dt, proportional to the angular velocity of the target about axis (Z), for application to a servomotor (S2); and (2) a signal dX M /dt, proportional to the angular velocity of the target about the horizontal axis (H), for application to another servomotor (S1). The control signal for a servomotor (S2) may be passed through an amplifier having a gain 1/cos,H where H is the angle of elevation of the aerial bore-sight. For surface targets the aerial system is rotatable only about one axis (S).
