Abstract
1,055,737. Cores. WELLWORTHY Ltd. March 24, 1965 [March 25, 1964], No. 12737/64. Heading B3F. A method of casting a metal piston having at least one cavity therein comprises the steps of forming a core of a water soluble salt to the shape of the cavity or cavities to be formed in the piston, casting the piston around this core and then dissolving the core. Examples of suitable salts include, sodium sulphate by itself, sodium carbonate with up to 10% potassium carbonate, sodium sulphate with up to 20% potassium sulphate and sodium sulphate with up to 15% sodium chloride. The soluble core may be reinforced by wire or glass fibre and may also be strengthened by the addition of a proportion of refractory or insoluble filler material such as alumina or calcium sulphate.
