Abstract

<PICT:1055584/C4-C5/1> A combustion burner for liquid and gaseous fuels comprises an axially movable centrally arranged flat-faced burner nozzle tip 5 and an annular conical channel 6 supplying fuel and oxygen or air to a cup-shaped flame chamber 1. The channel 6 is formed between the outer end of an air supply tube 12 and the nozzle tip 5, and diverges in the direction of the air supply. The cone angle of the nozzle tip 5 is greater than the cone angle of the inner surface of the tube 12. A central barrel 14 supplies fuel to an annular slit 15 in the nozzle tip 5. The flame chamber 1 has a flat bottom which is axially movable and its side wall is formed by the upper end of a hollow burner wall 7 divided internally by a cylindrical baffle 8 into two water coolant channels 9, 10. The nozzle tip 5 may have an axial channel preferably in the form of an inner divergent conical passage discharging into the flame chamber 1. This axial channel can serve for the supply of part of the fuel, the supply of steam, or the supply of oxygen alone for oxygen lancing or for the supply of a carrier gas together with slagging and other powdered products for steel making processes. Fuel may also be supplied from the outer wall of the channel 6 and the slit 15 may be replaced by a series of equally distributed openings. The burner can also be provided with water supply means for the injection of water into the gas stream for producing hydrogen and carbon monoxide by partial combustion of hydrocarbons with oxygen or air. Such means consist of small supply openings arranged either in a circle in the bottom 4 around the channel 6 or in the inner or outer walls of the channel 6 opposite the fuel supply openings if desired or a hollow space surrounding the tube 12 may supply the water.
