Abstract

1,055,570. Laminates. HOOVER BALL & BEARING CO. Aug. 22, 1963, No. 46823/65. Divided out of 1,055,566. Heading B5N. A method of making a laminate comprises the steps of positioning one or more layers incorporating thermosetting plastics material on one surface of a flat compressible substrate, rapidly heating the plastics material to a temperature which will sufficiently part-cure the plastics material to maintain its integrity under compression, but so that it will not crack, applying a pressure progressively along the surface layer of the plastics material forcing the plastics material against the substrate and compressing the latter beneath the plastics material, continuing to maintain pressure and heat on the plastics material and the substrate until the plastics material is set, and thereafter immediately rapidly cooling the plastics material while maintaining such compression. A modification of the process comprises positioning a number of layers incorporating thermosetting plastics material on the surface of a wood workpiece, rapidly heating the plastics material to a viscous state, progressively applying a load pressure to the surface of the plastics material and the workpiece, forcing the plastics material against the workpiece and exceeding the compressive strength of the wood and forming a compressed layer beneath the plastics material, and curing the plastics material on the compressed layer of wood while maintaining the plastics material under pressure. Apparatus suitable for effecting the process is described (see Specification 1,055,566). The process may be effected in such a manner that, when a plurality of sheets of plastics material are used, the substrate is not adhered thereto. The specified plastics material is paper impregnated with phenol or melamine formaldehyde resins.
