Abstract

1,055,284. Drying food. H. GRIFFON. July 29, 1963 [July 30, 1962; Jan. 28, 1963], No. 30005/63. Heading A2D. [Also in Division F4] Apparatus for drying fruit or vegetable powders, pharmaceutical or diabetic food products or pasty substances comprises means 17 for spreading a thin layer of the substance on at least one side of an endless band 4 of non-heated, non-permeable material which travels through a chamber (not shown) traversed by a gas heated to a temperature which does not heat the substance above 37‹C. As shown, the spreading device comprises a tank 17 in which the band is immersed, but a spreader roller may be utilized. The band is driven by pinions 5, 6, 7, 8 and 11 in a vertically sinuous path as shown and in alternative forms single or multiple horizontal runs are described. The dried layer is removed by passage about a series of rollers 12 - - - 16 to effect bending in alternate directions and scraper blades 18 - - - 21 detach the substance. The band comprises or is coated with a water-repellant material e.g. P.V.C. and is formed by two driven chains having, at spaced intervals, horizontally extending fingers with upstanding projections to project through corresponding apertures in the band.
