Abstract

1,055,123. Jet pulverizers. KOHLSWA JERNVERKS A.B. Feb. 5, 1964 [Feb. 5, 1963], No. 4929/64. Heading B2A. [Also in Division B3] A method of pulverizing solid material or molten material which is solid at ordinary temperatures comprises impinging against the material a liquid metal or alloy under pressure. The liquid metal or alloy is preferably mercury or an amalgam and is impinged preferably at a pressure of at least 5 atmospheres e.g. 10 to 20 atmospheres. The material to be pulverized may be austenitic stainless steel or a beryllium or cobalt-nickel alloy and may be heated before the liquid metal or alloy is impinged thereon. The powder produced is separated from the mercury and the separated powder is distilled in vacuo to remove remaining traces of mercury therefrom; the whole bulk of mercury may be distilled to separate powder possibly remaining therein. The apparatus shown comprises means for feeding downwards through a channel 10 in an insulating tube 1 a rod 9 to be pulverized and a supply pipe 11 for mercury under pressure which discharges into an annular channel 12 in a block comprising parts 2, 3 and 4. The channel 12 leads to an annular slot 13 from which the mercury is ejected to strike the rod 9. Inlets 6, 14 for protective gas discharge into annular channels 7, 15 respectively, the gas from the channel 15 flowing through a number of outlets arranged so that the gas has a helical motion around the rod 9. The slot 13 may be replaced by one or more discharge holes and the outlets 16 may be replaced by an annular slot. The slot 13 may have ribs 17 to impart a helical motion to the mercury. Vibrations may be generated by an electrical or mechanical vibrator acting on the block 2 to 4. A direct or alternating current, preferably of high frequency, may be applied to the rod 9 and block 2 to 4 (or the mercury).
