Abstract

A copolymer is prepared by reacting under anhydrous conditions in the presence of an ionic catalyst a mixture of 90 to 99.9% trioxane and 0.1 to 10% of a norbornadiene monomer of structure: <PICT:1055043/C3/1> or <PICT:1055043/C3/2> or <PICT:1055043/C3/3> where R1 to R7 each are hydrogen or an alkyl radical having up to 4 carbon atoms not more than one R being alkyl. Specified monomers are norbornadiene and 2-methyl and 4-methylnorbornadienes. Specified catalysts are the halides of aluminium, boron, tin, titanium, zirconium, strontium and niobium, their complexes, and fluoroborate aryl diazonium salts. The reaction may take under bulk or solvent conditions.
