Abstract

1,055,011. Punching; bending. AMP INCORPORATED. Feb. 11, 1965. No. 5932/65. Headings B3E and B3W. An apparatus for operating upon workpiece material in successive stages comprises a mounting 15 having a series of dies P to X disposed therein, and a series of punches P<SP>1</SP> to X<SP>1</SP> movably disposed in the mounting at spaced intervals therealong, each punch being arranged to co-operate with a corresponding one of the dies, first spring means 53 maintaining each punch normally in a non-working position, means for engaging the punches to move them so as to co-operate with the dies to act on the workpiece and second spring means 65 acting upon at least one of the punchengaging means to ensure that the pressure applied thereby to the workpiece does not exceed a given value. The second spring means 65 comprises a stack of disc washers arranged on a spindle 73, Fig. 3 (not shown), which acts on the end 57 of the punch P<SP>1</SP>. The stack of washers is positioned between a collar 74 on the spindle 73 and a plate 68 which is secured to the upper platen 13 of a crank-operated press. The actuating means Q<SP>11</SP>, R<SP>11</SP> and S<SP>11</SP> for the punches Q<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>1</SP> and S<SP>1</SP> are screwed directly into the platen 13. A pair of punches T<SP>1</SP> which notch the edges of the workpiece material are each actuated through a stack of discs 65 and the bending punches U<SP>11</SP>, V<SP>11</SP> and W<SP>11</SP> are each actuated through a stack of discs 79 which are operated upon directly by the platen 13. The position X is provided for a shearing tool which divides the leading component from the end of the workpiece material, if desired. The die V is mounted on a slide in the mounting 15 and can be raised by a rocker arm 30, Fig. 4 (not shown), which is actuated through a push-rod 39 and a stack of discs. in a similar way to the punch V<SP>1</SP>. The apparatus is described with reference to the manufacture of electrical connectors, Fig. 6 (not shown). The workpiece material is guided by a member 23. The punches R<SP>1</SP> and S<SP>1</SP> engage in holes, formed by the punch Q<SP>1</SP>, to locate the material.
