Abstract

1,054,966. Lifting articles by means of reduced pressure. K. REICH. April 24, 1964 [April 24, l963], No. 17015/64. Heading B8H. An article 1, Fig. 1, is lifted by the reduction in pressure caused by a stream of gas or liquid passing through a conduit 4, a nozzle 3 and out to atmosphere between a plate 2 of a holding device and a surface 1<SP>1</SP> of the article. To improve efficiency a deflector element 7, Fig. 3, may be provided. The deflector has support elements 8 against which the article is held. In Fig. 4 the device has a stop valve 19 which is raised and opened when its stem 22 abuts an article 24. The device may be rectangular in plan view. For lifting curved articles the device may be either curved to fit, or made of resilient material, Fig. 6. The reduction in pressure holds the device to the shape of the article assisted by spacers 28. Fig. 7 shows a board 30 being held clear of a supporting surface 32 whilst being cut by a saw 31. Stops prevent lateral displacement of the board. Several holding devices may be combined to lift large articles, some being connected to compressed air and some to a source of suction.
