Socks; uppers.-A combined resilient heel seat and shield, to protect the back, or back and sides of the wearer's heel, comprises a plate A, Fig. 1, of aluminium lined with a sock-piece B and having riveted to it a shield D of leather covered on its outside with canvas E; the plate carries two studs C adapted to engage helical springs let into recesses in the heel of the boot. In a modified construction, the plate A has riveted to it plate springs H having inter-engaging fingers H<1>, Figs. 3 and 4. In another construction, the plate springs H<3>, H<4> are arranged longitudinally of the boot, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and the boot is preferably made with a rise in the sole at K so as to provide a recess K<1> for the heel seat. Metal tips may be provided to take the rub of the springs. Fig. 7 shows another construction, in which the plate A is extended forwards and riveted to the sole at J<1>, the heel seat being supported on a single spring F<1> or on blade springs. A wedgepiece L, Fig. 8, may be inserted beneath the plate to locate the point of flexure; alternatively, or additionally, the sole may be shaped as shown in Fig. 6. In some cases, india-rubber may be used instead of metal springs.
