Abstract

Organic glass of good abrasion resistance is made by the polymerization of alkyl or methallyl esters of unsaturated carboxylic acids in a first stage using tert.-alcoholates of alkali metals as catalysts and free tent. alcohols as chain transfer agents to produce liquid oligomers, followed by a second stage of polymerization in which radical producing initiators are used. A copolymerizable monomer may be present with the allyl or methallyl ester during the first stage of polymerization, suitable monomers being methyl and n-butyl methacrylates, methyl acrylate, chloroacrylates, acrylonitrile and styrene. Alcoholates mentioned are sodium, lithium and potassium tert.- butanolates and tert.-hexanolates. Examples describe polymerizing allyl methacrylate, alone or in admixture with methyl or n-butyl methacrylate, in the presence of sodium tert.- butanolate and tert.-butanol in the first stage and dibenzoyl peroxide in the second stage.
