Abstract

1,053,386. Utilizing radiation detectors. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Sept.18, 1964 [June 18, 1963], No.24202/63. Heading G1A. The surface finish of rolled steel sheet is appraised by observing the pattern of light scattered from an incident beam on the surface, such patterns being characteristic of the surface finish and deteriorate with a fall in the quality of the finish to a more general scatter. In the arrangement shown in the Fig. a mask 22 characteristic of the type of finish prevents scattered light contained in the pattern from reaching the detector 21 which is therefore only able to detect more general scattering thereby giving an indication of a fall in surface quality. The mask shown at (a) is suitable for a mirror-like finish where the scattered light is confined within the dotted lines, which are in a direction perpendicular to the direction of rolling R. The specularly reflected rays do not reach the detector as they are focused on to the control bar of the mask. The other masks shown are for other finisher and additional detectors may compare scattered light received through the various slits. The whole assembly may scan the sheet across its width.
