Abstract
1,053,345. Casting metals. W. C. HERAEUS G.m.b.H. Nov. 25, 1963 [Nov. 24, 1962], No. 46443/63. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] In a method and apparatus for degassing and casting molten metals, the latter is passed through a vacuum siphon, to the inlet tube of which a carrier gas is introduced at one or more locations. The length of the inlet tube is not significantly less than the barometric height of the metal, while the outlet tube of the siphon leads into a vacuum casting chamber. As illustrated in Fig. 2, vacuum pump 3 causes metal to rise through inlet tube 4 into vessel 1 from where, with an appropriate injection of gas through inlets 5A, 5B, it can be caused to flow over weir 9 and into continuous casting mould 45 located in vessel 10, from which the resultant rod is withdrawn through pressure-reducing stages 48, 49 by rolls 52. In a modification (Fig. 1, not shown) the chamber 10 may contain a series of ingot moulds mounted on a turntable. Where gas is injected into the inlet tube at two or more locations, an inert gas flow at the upper location is used to control the flow of metal to the casting chamber, while a refining gas is injected at the lower location.
