Abstract

1,053,202. Safety harnesses. TELEFLEX PRODUCTS Ltd. June 11, 1963 [June 18, 1962], No. 2343/62. Heading A3V. A safety harness 26 is wound on a spring returned reel 24, and an inertia locking device comprises two semi cylindrical interia members 32 which are held together by springs 40, Fig. 3 (not shown), and thereby rotate with the reel 24. Cam recesses 42 in the reel 24 and 36 in the inertia members 32 accommodate rollers 44 and on angular acceleration of the reel 24 the members 32 move apart under centrifugal force and the rollers move round with the reel and urge the friction elements 34 on the inertia members 32 against the housing 16. In the embodiment of Fig. 7 (not shown) the inertia members are pawls 60 mounted on pivots 62 with teeth 70 which are held out of engagement with teeth 72 in the housing by means of compression springs 74. On sufficient acceleration of the reel 24 the pawls 60 are urged outwards by centrifugal force against the force of the spring 74 to lock the reel.
