Abstract
1,053,007. Continuous tube polymerization. SOCIETE NATIONALE DES PETROLES D'AQUITAINE. July 6, 1965 [July 24, 1964], No. 28646/65. Heading B1X. [Also in Division C3] An apparatus for continuous polymerization of caprolactam in a tube, comprises means for introducing discs at intervals into the polymerization mixture as it enters the tube so that they are carried through the tube with the mixture and remove deposits of solid polymer adhering to its walls. Said introducing means comprises a disc feeder, a disc centering device and means for conveying the discs one at a time from the feeder to the centering device and then to the inlet of the polymerization tube. As shown in Fig. 1, disc 12a, which may be made of nylon 6, is carried to centering device 17 by movement of shaft 2 to the right. On movement of the shaft to the left, the disc is centered by piston 18 and falls into recess 2d. A second movement of the shaft to the right carries the disc to the base of polymerization tube 10 where it is forced upwards by the polymerization mixture fed from pipe 28. The feed mechanism is surrounded by water jacket 80 at about 80‹C. and the polymerization region by steam jacket 31 at 150‹C. In Fig. 3 (not shown) a battery of such apparatus is fed by a single supply tank of polymerization mixture.
