Abstract

1,052,541. Strengthening glassware by coating. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 1, 1966, No. 1901/65. Addition to 976,508. Heading C1M. [Also in Division H1] To strengthen a cathode-ray tube, at least part of the outer surface of the tube is covered with a thin layer of a glaze having a lower coefficient of expansion than that of the glass of the tube, the glaze is then heated superficially for a short time to a temperature at which the glaze becomes mobile, and the tube cooled to give a rough irregularly grooved surface where the glaze was applied. An intermediate layer of a crystallizable glass, of lower coefficient of expansion than the glass of the tube, may be provided. The composition of the glasses are as disclosed in Specifications 971,702 and 976,508.
