In a liquid meter for preventing the registration of gases the meter operates in the following manner. Assuming all air has been exhausted from a collecting chamber 15 so that a float 44 and a valve 34 are in the position shown in Fig. 4. A chamber 31 of an air cylinder 25 is vented through a passage 33, outlet 53, passage 52 and exhaust port 54 and a spring 43 forces a valve 40 against a seal of a by-pass 42 and simultaneously opens a butterfly valve 20. The collection of a sufficient amount of air in chamber 15 will decrease the liquid level therein and the float 44 will drop to a point where the rod 55 of the valve 34 will move to a position, Fig. 5 (not shown), in which high pressure air from a source 32 will pass through the valve 34 and passage 33 to chamber 31 forcing a piston 29 downwards to partially or completely close valve 20 and restrict the flow through meter 16. Simultaneously the valve 40 is opened to allow air collected in the chamber 15 to pass through an opening 38, connector 42 and by-pass line 41 to the discharge side of the meter 16. While valve 40 remains open the liquid level in chamber 15 will tend to rise and lift the float 44 to move the rod 55 to the position shown in Fig. 4.
