Magnetic tape transducing apparatus has a easing with an opening for edgewise insertion and removal of tape spools, the apparatus including guides for directing the spools to positions where they are aligned with driving members for the spools, and positioning means for causing or enabling the tape spools and driving members to engage with one another. Referring to Fig. 2, an opening in the casing (not shown) allows spools to be inserted in guides 4 which slope downwards slightly, and the opening may be closed by a flap 2. When the flap is closed, levers 7 operated by the flap lower the guides 4 so that the spools engage supporting discs 9, a pressure device 18 mounted on the flap presses the tape into contact with a capstan 17, and the flap operates a switch 11 which switches on the drive. The drive-shaft 12 is coupled to the supporting discs 9 by belts 20 and 21 which are slightly tensioned to drive the spools in opposite directions. For fast wind or re-wind the flap 2 is opened and is displaced to left or right thereby rotating crank arm 25 and the support 22 of the drive shaft so that the tension in one of the belts 20 and 21 is increased whilst that in the other is decreased. Stops 29 prevent such displacement of the flap when it is closed and the capstan is operative; a cam member 28 allows the switch 11 to be operated when the flap is displaced and slightly open. A latch may be provided for locking the flap in its closed and in its slightly open positions, Fig. 3 (not shown). A switch for switching into the record condition may be arranged so that it can be operated when the flap is open and is only held in the actuated position when the flap is closed.
