A roller for applying adhesive or other fluent materials to non-planar surfaces of shoe soles or other workpieces comprises an inner sleeve of resilient foamed material, drawn on to a mounting shaft or on to a tube pushable thereon, and a surrounding covering consisting of a substantially liquid-impermeable intermediate layer and a film-forming absorbent outer layer. In Fig. 1 a resilient assembly 202 is drawn on to a shaft 201. The intermediate layer 204 may be a rubber or synthetic plastics foil tube drawn on under tension, and the outer layer 205 may be a fabric web, a fibre fleece, a layer of foam material or hair or other low absorption layer. The inner foamed material sleeve 203 and the layers 204, 205 may be produced separately or as a multi-layer body. The sleeve 203 may be united with the layer 204. The layers 204, 205 may comprise synthetic plastics or guttapercha flocculated or provided on one side with a felt layer. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the inner sleeve 213 is drawn on to a tube 212 which may be assembled on a shaft 210 with a collar and/or screw arrangement for easy removal of the tube with the resilient assembly. To prevent penetration of adhesive into the foamed material the intermediate layer 214 of impermeable material is turned inwards and clamped over end discs 217 which limit the inner sleeve axially.
