A method of packing parallel-sided articles of rounded cross-section in a rectangular parallelapipedic package comprises placing the articles 3 in rows to form a block, inserting the block into a tight fitting flexible plastics envelope 4 which has one or both of its ends open, folding the ends inwardly and heatsealing in position. In one embodiment bottles are fed from a trough 1 by a piston 30 into the tube 4 which has previously been positioned over the end of the trough by a reciprocating carrier 25 which retains the tube in stretched position by suction and grips it with members 29. The block is placed in the central part of a trough section table 6, which rises to surround the tube on three sides after the carrier has withdrawn. The length of tube is severed by a knife 23. The bottles may be finally positioned by the end 31 of the table folding upwardly to form an abutment, the same movement folding up an end wall of the tube. The equivalent other end 11 is folded upwardly, the end of the package then being as in Fig. 4, the length of the tube being such as to provide a strip 35 which lies against a flap 13. End flaps 9, 10 are swung inwardly resulting in the form of Fig. 5 (not shown), which allows the strip 35 to be heat-sealed. In alternative sealing methods, wings 14, 15, Fig. 6 (not shown), are folded inwardly under tension and sealed against a temporarily inserted bearing pad 19 forming a carrying handle or they may be cut off and apertured to form carrying lugs. The bottles may be arranged in the package horizontally. The package can be formed by placing plastics foil in a trough (Fig. 8, not shown) and arranging the bottles inside before sealing the foil under tension on the top to tube it about the bottles.
