Abstract

1,051,275. Making ceraminated metal; making articles from scrap. WURTTEMBERGISCHE METALLWARENFABRIK. Oct. 26, 1964 [Nov. 22, 1963], No. 43587/64. Headings B3A and B3V. [Also in Division C7] A method of making metal fibres from scrap metal &c. comprises making a compact body from the scrap metal and a binding agent or mixture, forming fibres from the compact body, as by a turning, planing or milling operation, and subsequently removing the binding agent from the fibres. A binding agent may be used which is hardened by polymerization, condensing or cross-linking, if desired with the application of heat and/or pressure. Pressure may be applied after solidification of the binder, which may be added in fluid, powder or granular form. Examples of binder are natural or synthetic resins, asphalt, metal or metal compound. The scrap metal may be dipped in a primer or roughened before compacting with the binder. The fibres may be freed from the binder mechanically, chemically or by heating or cooling, and they may be heat-diffused with other metals, ceramics, oxi-ceramics or a metalceramic mixture, the materials then being dried and sintered and again dried, if necessary under compression. Cutting plates may be made by immersion, or spray, coating a body of metal fibres and ceramic material with a layer of a cermet, and sintering the coated body. Filters and other machine parts may also be made, or porous articles coated with a ceramic, metal, metal compound and/or mixture of these materials. Also, articles may be made in which the spaces between the metal fibres are filled with a plastics material, ceramic, metal compound and/or mixture of these materials, or in which the fibres are protected against corrosion and oxidated by alloying constituents. Fibre lengths of 0À3-5 mm., preferably 0À3-2 mm., are referred to as sintering at constant volume, after which the body may be compressed. In an embodiment, Fig. 1a (not shown), the pieces of scrap metal are cemented together between end discs 1, 2, and the assembly placed under compression. Alternatively, Fig. 2b (not shown), a similar assembly mounted on a square shaft is spun in a centrifuge so that the fibres migrate outwardly. Perforated strips of scrap, Fig. 3b (not shown), may be wound on the shaft, Fig. 4a (not shown), or scrap in the form of discs 13, Fig. 5a (not shown), may be used which need not be circular.
