Abstract

In an electrolytic machining process, machining takes place intermittently, with the electrolyte between the workpiece and tool being replaced <PICT:1050139/C6-C7/1> in the intervals between machining by pumping action effected by causing the tool 1 to be reciprocated relative to the workpiece 4 by means of a cam 2 and cam follower 3. Electrolyte passes from a reservoir 7 through a non-return value 8 into the working gap 9 between the tool and workpiece on the downward stroke of the tool 1, and is expelled via a non-return valve 10 on the upward stroke of the tool; the space between tool and workpiece being thus replenished with fresh electrolyte on each reciprocating movement of the tool. The workpiece may be fed continuously relative to the tool. The voltage applied may be constant, pulsating, alternating or alternating superimposed with a undirectional voltage, such that high current flow occurs when the tool is in the working position relative to the workpiece.
