Abstract

[Also in Division B6] A method of making a mask for use in patterned layer deposition by vacuum evaporation comprises the steps of bonding an unapertured sheet 4 to an apertured plate 1 and forming apertures 5, 6, 7 in the sheet within the apertures 2a, 2b, 2c, in the plate. As shown, a laminated stainless steel plate 1 is flat to within 25 microns pad the apertures 2a, 2b, 2c are formed by photo-etching, spark machining or milling. The stainless steel sheet 1 is bonded to the plate by silver brazing. The apertures 5, 6, 7 are made by spark machining.
