Abstract
1,049,774. Buckles; friction grip fastenings. TELEFLEX PRODUCTS Ltd. Nov. 8, 1962 [Nov. 15, 1961; June 14, 1962], Nos. 40902/61 and 22907/62. Heading E2A. [Also in Division A3] A harness for protecting passengers or securing articles in vehicles includes snubbing means through which a strap or straps can freely pass whilst they remain unfastened about the person or article but which after fastening of the straps prevent their elongation under tension. In a first embodiment in which the snubbing means is incorporated in the buckle, straps 10, 12 are threaded through buckle members 40, 70 respectively and doubled back on themselves being fixed to an anchorage at one end and to a spring-loaded take-up device adjacent the other end. The first buckle part 40 consists of a base 42 having upstanding wings 44 between which is mounted a bar 46 and a pivot pin 50 and having abutments 52 and guides 54. The harness strap 10 is looped round a fixed rod 62 of a snubbing clip 56 which is pivoted on the pin 50 and comprises also side arms 58 connected by a hand plate 60 and a movable snubbing bar 64, the reduced ends of which are slidably mounted in short slots (not shown) provided in the arms 58. The side arms 58 are also provided with short pegs 68. The second part of the buckle is a second snubbing clip 70 comprising two side arms 72 joined by a hand plate 74 and a bar 76 carrying a loop of the second strap 12. In use the bar 76 is inserted through the clip 56 between the pivot pin 50 and the pegs 68 and the hand plate 60 is pushed towards the base plate 42, whereupon the clips assume the position shown in Fig. 3, locking the two parts of the buckle together and locking the strap loops against running movement. In a single strap harness the second buckle part is mounted on a fixed anchorage. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 1, of Application No. 22907/62, cognate not shown) a conventional buckle allowing free running of the straps therethrough is used and the snubbing device is associated with the take up device. The or each strap 14 is secured at one end to a shaft 12 and at the other to a rod 18 carrying end levers 20 attached to a slotted shaft 22 through which the strap is threaded Retraction springs 16 are secured at one end to the shaft 12 and at the other to the rod 18. A fixed snubbing bar 24 lies close to the shaft 22 and a guide roller 26 keeps the straps aligned with the slot in the shaft 22. In use, before fastening the buckle members, pull on a buckle member unwinds the strap from the spindle 12. When the buckle is fastened about the person tension due to movement of the body pulls both runs of the strap rocking the levers 20 and shaft 22 so that the strap is snubbed against the bar 24. An auxiliary spring may be provided to urge the shaft 22 out of the snubbing position.
