Abstract

To allow fibre optic face plates to withstand higher bake-out temperatures, each glass fibre is clad with a tightly adherent transparent layer of a refractory oxide consisting of silica, alumina or zirconia or a mixture of two of three thereof. The fibres may be wet with a silica sol or high viscosity liquid concentrate formed by heat-treating solutions of organic salts of alumina or zirconia, then dried and heated at high temperature, e.g. between 1000 DEG and 1600 DEG F. in a non-reducing atmosphere. The refractory cladding may be applied directly to the glass core or used as an overlay on a low refractive index glass cladding already surrounding the core.
