Abstract

Projectiles.-Consists in an anti-aircraft projectile containing dish-shaped disks or the like which are nested in the casing and either carry an incendiary substance, or have serrated or like cutting- edges, or have both these features, the disks being blown out whilst rotating at a high speed imparted by the casing. In the construction shown, the disks d carrying an incendiary powder or other combustible substance are piled within the casing a and are separated by a wad or plunger c from a bursting-charge, which is contained within a vessel b. The disks are perforated centrally to form a flash-passage from the nose-fuse, or they surround a central tube, and each disk has around the central hole an annular projection with grooves d<6> forming flash-passages whereby the charges on the disks may be ignited when the shell explodes. The charges may, however, ignite spontaneously when the disks have been expelled. Rotation of the casing a is communicated to the disks by slots a<2> engaging projections d<3>. The filling in the front part of the shell may comprise a wooden block i, a layer of felt j, and a steel plate f.
