Abstract
An elastomer-forming composition comprising (A) from 0.01 to 20 parts of iron oxide, (B) 100 parts of a siloxane having a viscosity of at least 100,000 cp. at 25 DEG C. and having the formula <FORM:1049400/C3/1> and (C) 10 to 300 parts of a filler, is made by milling a mixture of (B), (C) and 1 to 200 parts of an iron oxide masterbatch consisting essentially of a mixture of iron oxide and an alkenyl-terminated siloxane free of iron oxide agglomerates greater than 50 microns in diameter, wherein the iron oxide is used in amount of about 0.1 part to about 4.5 parts of the siloxane which has a viscosity of less than 100,000 cp. at 25 DEG C. and consists essentially of units of the formula R2SiO and terminal units of the formula R1(R)2SiO 1/2 , where each R is a monovalent hydrocarbon, halohydrocarbon or cyanoalkyl radical, R1 is an alkenyl radical and a is from 1.9 to 2.01 inclusive. Fillers specified are SiO2 (fume, precipitated and alkoxy-modified). TiO2, CaCO3, Fe2O3, diatomaceous earth and lithopone. Iron oxides specified are Fe2O3, a mixture containing FeO and a major amount of Fe2O3, and hydrated Fe2O3. The compositions can be heat cured by means of organic peroxides or by high energy irradiation. In a typical Example (1) a mixture of a vinyl-terminated dimethylpolysiloxane and red iron oxide was milled until the particle size of the oxide was below 50 microns; a portion of the resulting masterbatch was then milled into a mixture of a methylphenylsiloxane copolymer, fume silica and a methoxyterminated dimethylsiloxane, and after adding benzoyl peroxide, the mixture was sheeted and heat cured.
